Jan. 30th-Feb. 3rd
Hello! I was so proud of our classroom spellers who both did well at last weeks school wide spelling bee. Many thanks to classmates for coming out to support them!
We celebrated the end of the second quarter last Friday with an assembly that included the Sanderson High School Cheerleaders, a wonderful group of young women, who along with their coach, Joyner's own Ms. Sherrow, helped our students focus on the importance of putting forth their best effort as they move into the second semester!
February is HERE! Theme continues to be our focus in Language Arts. Students are practicing discerning textual themes through class read alouds on the lives of Jackie Robinson, Sojourner Truth, and Anne Frank. They are also applying what they have learned when reading individual texts. After reading, students work to encapsulate in one word the message the author is trying to convey. They then add words to come up with a sentence or phrase that can be universally applied as a theme.
Math finds us talking about mean, median, mode and range. Easy to get confused with all those M's. Practicing the definitions will increase student confidence. Definitions are being added to math journals this week. Remember Mean "means" average. Median-Middle and Mode-Most as helpful clues.
We are discussing biomes in science and have already covered the tundra, the desert, and the taiga or coniferous forest. By week's end we will have looked at the decidous forest, the tropical forest and fresh/salt water biomes. Students are taking notes in class and watching videos to help them learn about the different biomes. They are currently working on a compare contrast pargraph examining similarities/differences between the desert and turndra biomes.
I will send a class list home on Friday for students to use when preparing valentines for classmates. Valentines can be purchased or homemade. We will share and enjoy our valentines on Tues. Feb. 14th before recess.
