Dec.19th-21st

Thanks amazing parents for all that you did to make this a special week in our classroom.  We all greatly appreciate the time you took to gather and purchase materials and send them in so that we could enjoy creating holiday crafts.  Thanks too, for the fun treats for our holiday celebration today.  We had a wonderful time and want to thank you for making it possible!

I wish for all of you a delightful time with family over the break.  Enjoy the chance to slow down and be together.  I hope everyone will find time to play board games, read, exercise, and be refreshed.

I look forward to seeing you in the New Year!

Mrs. M.

PS. Last week I mentioned that I wouldn't be surprised if someone from our class ends up climbing Mt. Everest....after today's water cycle presentations, I am thinking we may also have some class members who will end up on the stage! They have great presence and poise!

Dec. 12th-16th

Congratulations to our super spellers! Ivy won our class spelling bee and Gracen was our runner up.  We had 16 students participate and they progressed all the way into the 7th grade words!

This week we are talking about problem solution in reading. Peak Final Project Presentations are complete and final copies of letters to Peak author, Roland Smith, are being written.

Our fraction unit finds us working on word problems in math. We always underline the question being asked and circle important information in order to help us decide what process should be used to solve the word problem.   Before the week is out we will also learn how to use calculators to simplify fractions and to move back and forth between decimals and fractions.

Students are learning about clouds and climate this week as part of our weather unit. They completed a webquest on clouds during our technology time on Tuesday.

Thanks so much for the books that were purchased for our classroom from the bookfair.  We will all enjoy the increased selection! Thanks too for the pillow donations.  We appreciate the cozy atmosphere they help  create during reading time.

FYI....If you need a last minute gift...JYJ 4th grade classes still have chocolate chip cookie mix in a jar for sale.  All proceeds go towards Help Heal Haiti!

December 5th-9th

Congratulations to members of the JYJ Gold Choir who were selected to perform in the WCPSS Pieces of Gold Performance!

The book fair is in full swing! Students will shop today at 2:10.  The bookfair continues through midday Friday.

This week our language arts mini lessons have focused on cause/effect.  Ask your student to show you the graphic organizer in their binder where they have been taking notes about cause/effect.  Students have also begun presenting Peak final projects.  The projects range from posters to powerpoints and show the depth of research and creative effort that students have invested in their work. (I will not be surprised if  one day I  hear that one or more members of this class reach the summit of Everest!)

In math this week we are doing computation and problem solving with fractions.  My math class took quizzes home on Tues to be signed and returned and will have another quiz on Thursday.

We have been discussing different factors that impact weather in science class.  Types of clouds are next on our agenda. Watching a weather forecast with an ear for our weather words would be a great way to extend student learning.

FYI.....Students have been assigned Music and PE projects by Dr. Farias and Mr. Poyer.  They have had time to work on the projects before/after school and during technology.  Please check in with your student about their progress.

One last note, Tuesday Dec.13th from 4-9:00pm is JYJ PTA fundraiser night at Pronto Pasta.(located on East Six Forks Rd.) Dine in or take out!
