Week of Oct 24th

Oh my! It has been an exciting week! You can see evidence of our class spirit in the pictures below.  Wacky Tacky Day is tomorrow and Friday we will end the week by showing our JYJ colors.

This week we have continued our study of figurative language comparing metaphors and similes. Tomorrow students will search for and explain examples of similes in our novel Peak.  We had a brief scare when reading Peak today...it seemed that Peak's opportunity to reach the summit of Mt. Everest had ended but thankfully through an unexpected twist of the plot Peak is still a viable candidate to make it to the top! We will have a quiz on Unit 3 Peak vocabulary on Friday of this week.

Students will take a math post assessment at the end of next wek as we finish our unit on multiplication and division. As our landform unit draws to a close students have created topographical maps that show elevation.  I am including some examples below.

Thanks so much for remembering to consistently sign your child's agenda each evening. Good homework habits are crucial to success in school.

Hello Parents,

I enjoyed seeing so many of you at the Joyner Jamboree.  I had a blast helping in our 5th grade hot dog booth.  I was so impressed with all the 5th graders who helped, showing up on time, jumping right in, and working hard for their entire shift! Thanks to all who prepared, packaged and sent in baked goods for the bake sale!

I was fortunate last week to be one of  several JYJ staff members attending the WorldView Conference at UNC. I was inspired by two action packed days of speakers and workshops addressing:

Peace and Conflict: Ten Years after 9/11

Upon my return to JYJ, I was pleased to receive a great report from the sub who praised your children for their effort and cooperation.

We have begun talking about figurative language specifically metaphors and similes. Students are developing their ability to identify, analyze, and create metaphors and similes. We are also finding examples of metaphors and similes in Peak, by Roland Smith. Speaking of Peak, we are moving towards the final chapters eager to find out if Peak will make the summit of Everest!

We have also initated a conversation about topographical maps in science. Students are learning about contour lines and intervals.  This week they will be creating a contour map. In math we are moving from multiplication to division.

THIS WEEK IS....SPIRIT WEEK!!

Monday: Pajama Day - wear your favorite PJs to school!

Tuesday : Crazy Hat/Crazy Hair Day - wear a crazy hairdo or a funny hat.

Wednesday: Team Day - wear your favorite team jersey or shirt!

Oct 10th-Oct 14th

Thanks so much to everyone who came to the Human Growth and Development Presentation and Math Night! It was a wonderful evening from start to finish. Thanks so much for your participation!

We managed to get our flour, salt and water mixtures combined for our landform models last Friday morning. Big thanks go out to Marco's mom for her support and assistance to students and teacher. The next step came yesterday as students followed their blueprint to create landforms and water forms such as meanders, floodplains, and deltas. We will complete the final step of painting our landforms later this week.

Students have begun new math groups this week based on a pre-assessmnent taken last week. Our new unit includes multiplication, division, factors, multiples,LCM, GCF, exponents, and order of operations. All of these skills are easier with quick recall of multiplication  facts! Drill those facts, especially 6's-12's.

New Peak vocabulary words (Unit 3) will be handed out Thursday.  We are making good progress in the novel with excitement building as to whether Peak will make it to the top of Mt. Everest. Students will complete their Four Kinds of Sentences Projects by the end of this week.

Please be on the lookout for a D.C. schedule of events and payment plan in today's Wed folder. Also remember to send in permission slips and $$ for our Nov.18th field trip to the Poe Health Center.

Parents, opportunities abound if you are interested in helping raise scholarship funds for our D.C. trip.  Please email Kirsten O'Brien at iveyobrien@bellsouth.net to let her know if you would like to sell hotdogs at the Joyner Jamboree or volunteer at the school store on Thurs. mornings.

Picture Day Tomorrow! Remember your form, money and smile!

Early Release on Friday at 12:30

If you haven't already done so please sign and return 1st quarter progress reports  that came home in Wed folders last week.

This week we are completing our math unit on place value with problem solving. Students have been practicing strategies to solve word problems. Please be sure your child continues to study their multiplication facts as our next unit will focus on multiplication and division.

Our mini lessons this week are highlighting types of sentences, and strategies for creating "million dollar sentences". Look for the 4 Kinds of Sentences Poster Rubric in your child's binder (Language Arts section) and sign to acknowledge that you are aware of the project. This is an in class project.

In science we are busily planning our landform models. Still looking for a few parent volunteers to assist with creating these Fri morning. Please email if you are available. Also, students signed up last week for items they could bring in to assist with the landform project.  Check your child's agenda to see what they signed up for. Each student signed up for one item and the list included:

5lb. bag of flour
26 oz. container of salt
tempera paints (green, brown, yellow)

Parents, You can help raise money for our DC trip by being a parent volunteer at the following activities

1. Operating the school store on Thurs. mornings.

2. Help sell hotdogs during the Joyner Jamboree

To volunteer please contact:Kristin O'Brien at iveyobrien@bellsouth.net
