Hello Parents,

I enjoyed seeing so many of you at the Joyner Jamboree.  I had a blast helping in our 5th grade hot dog booth.  I was so impressed with all the 5th graders who helped, showing up on time, jumping right in, and working hard for their entire shift! Thanks to all who prepared, packaged and sent in baked goods for the bake sale!

I was fortunate last week to be one of  several JYJ staff members attending the WorldView Conference at UNC. I was inspired by two action packed days of speakers and workshops addressing:

Peace and Conflict: Ten Years after 9/11

Upon my return to JYJ, I was pleased to receive a great report from the sub who praised your children for their effort and cooperation.

We have begun talking about figurative language specifically metaphors and similes. Students are developing their ability to identify, analyze, and create metaphors and similes. We are also finding examples of metaphors and similes in Peak, by Roland Smith. Speaking of Peak, we are moving towards the final chapters eager to find out if Peak will make the summit of Everest!

We have also initated a conversation about topographical maps in science. Students are learning about contour lines and intervals.  This week they will be creating a contour map. In math we are moving from multiplication to division.
